GAUTAMA BUDDHA

Gautama Buddha was known as Siddhartha at birth and was believed to have lived in South Asia during the 6th or 5th century BC, and founded Buddhism.

He was born in Lumbini, which is now Nepal, to royal parents of the Shakya Clan, but renounced his heir to the throne to become a monk and meditate.

He attained enlightenment at Bodha Gaya which is now in India. The Buddha lived 45 more years to preach. All of his teachings are known as Dhamma. He did not ask people to worship him or believe him to get any favors. He told people to practice meditation according to his instructions and they would attain Nibbana or peace like him.

DHAMMA OR BUDDHIST TEACHINGS

OR

TEACHINGS OF BUDDHA

Prince Siddhartha meditated for six years and after enlightenment, he became known as Gautama Buddha and he lived for 45 more years. During those years, he preached to a lot of people and a lot of them became monks or bhikkhus. His teachings became known as Dhamma. They are mostly written in Pali, a language used thousands of years ago.

Monks have to learn the teachings of Buddha in Pali to be able to preach and are responsible for the preservation and dissemination of the Buddha’s teaching and the guidance of Buddhist lay people. The sermons given by monks are as important as the Dhamma because monks usually preach in the language of the local people and they elaborate the dhamma with examples so that it would be easier to understand.
